Using the Reef Check California Survey Sites online map

Click on a section title (in blue) to show or hide that section. Click on "Show all" to view all sections at once.

Zooming
Use the scroll wheel on your mouse to zoom in and out of the map. Alternatively, use the + and - buttons on the top navigation panel to zoom in and out.

To zoom into a particular region, hold down the Shift button on the keyboard while you drag the cursor across the selected area.

Click on the globe symbol to zoom to the full extent of the map.

Panning
Click and drag your cursor to pan across the map. Alternatively, use the arrows on the map frame to pan North, South, East, or West.

Individual Site Information
To view the name of a site, use your mouse cursor to hover over a point location (represented by a round RCCA logo).

To view site information for an individual dive site, click on a site location on the map. A popup will appear with substrate information and links to further dive site information.

Species Abundance
To view fish abundance data, click on the radio button in front of "-All Fish-" on the left side of the map. The dropdown menu will activate, allowing you to select an individual fish species or to view abundance data for all fish combined.

To view invertebrate abundance data, click on the radio button in front of "-All Invertebrates-" on the left side of the map. The dropdown menu will activate, allowing you to select an individual invertebrate species or to view abundance data for all invertebrates combined.

To view seaweed abundance data, click on the radio button in front of "-All Seaweed-" on the left side of the map. The dropdown menu will activate, allowing you to select an individual seaweed species or to view abundance data for all seaweed combined.

Once you have selected a species (or set of species), bars will appear on the map, representing relative abundances of species at all sites for which data has been reported. If data has not (yet) been reported for a site, the site will not appear on the map.

Change Over Time
Select a species or group of species to display by clicking on the corresponding radio button.

Select two time averages to compare. For each site, survey data is averaged across the specified six month "time average".

Click on Refresh Map to view results on map. Results are displayed as "increase", "decrease", "no change", or "missing data".

Map Overlays
To add additional map overlays to the map, click on the box in front of the corresponding overlay.

Please note that the "Kelp" overlay will only appear when the map is zoomed in close to the shore.

Base Layers
There are two available base layers for the map:

Imagery is the Google Imagery layer. Click on the "imagery" button on the map to turn this layer on.

Hybrid is the Google Hybrid layer (includes city names and streets). Click on the "hybrid" button on the map to turn this layer on.


Map Legend
The map legend can be toggled on or off by clicking on the arrow in the upper right-hand corner of the map.
